"Harmony is Not a Function of Style"

Unlocking the Triadic Chromatic Approach and

If a guitarist wants to play the note “A”, what are the choices that must be made? It always seems the same three…. Which Octave, Which Position, Which Finger…? By then the song has already ended. The Hardest part of playing truthfully on the guitar, is trying not to let the hands take over. This happens by default when a guitarist has to compensate for the fact that it’s easier to play habitual lines, chords, and melodic phrases than the truth. If it were possible to avoid the “Guitar Traps” then the world as it is known today would have an entirely different melodic sensibility, one that could and can be directed by guitarists. “Harmony is not a Function of Style”, predicates that truth is not dictated by style but by anyone who believes in harmony and fundamental time no matter what instrument!

 

I have people from all over the world studying with me and it works quite easily. My students are most interested in the Triadic Chromatic Approach and/or more fluidic freedoms on the guitar. I always ask what each student is most looking for or working on in their own playing? What is the biggest challenge to your playing right now? What are the most important goals you would like to achieve short term and long term?

 

The process is simple!

I have people send me audio mp3 or audio/video files of them playing through standards and improvisational ideas so I can better understand where they are coming from and work towards future concepts. AFTER I receive a payment notice as well as the 

student examples, I will email back:

 

• An overall evaluation in written and/or audio form

• Written notation examples to practice.... PDF's, Finale/Notepad Exercises, Conceptual Diagrams, etc....

• An audio/video examples of me speaking and playing through some ideas to better help illustrate the Triadic Chromatic Approach and other fundamental improvisational ideas towards a better freedom on the guitar.

Once a student has already taken one or two online lessons and established a good foundation using the triadic language, I can then move on to Skype lessons and develop things from there.

​

These individual guitar lessons help unlock key aspects in the harmonic nature of guitar in order to play what, where, and how you want out of truth…. Not out of prostitution or physical dependence. I always tell my students (myself included) playing truthfully especially on the guitar means knowing where you were, are, and will be going all at the same time. This has to be practiced using harmony and time together, failure to do so means giving in to all the traps that lead to lies in improvisation.
